Although we here at the Bagatelle Museum have absolutely no idea where this came from or what it was for, we love the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zoh1LGADKI8&feature=related" target="_blank">That Girl</a> vibe to it. In fact, is it us, or does the hat on the far right look identical to the one in the opening credits?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you lived in Manhattan any time in the early 1980s you probably stopped in at <a href="http://reminiscence.com/pages/about-us" target="_blank">Reminiscence</a> once or twice. At that time it was just off 8th street under the Capezio store. It was, along with stores like Unique and Canal Jeans, the place to go for one of a kind vintage clothing. They had a whole series of these bags and they would give you one whether you purchased a gown or a pair of socks. Now it's a bit of a hodge-podge of novelty goods and clothing but you have to admire its longevity. </div>

If you've never been to <a href="http://p.o.s.h./">P.O.S.H.</a> in Chicago you must go immediately. It's one of those stores that's really well curated and carries everything from modern stationery to great flea market finds (not to mention some fabulous early 20th-century coronation souvenirs. Make sure to check it out when you're in town. </div>

We don't know about you, but we thought this bag was rawther wonderful! If you haven't been to the Plaza Hotel lately there's a pretty amazing boutique dedicated to New York's most famous six year old, not to mention rooms for tea parties, ballet lessons and even cooking classes for Lord's sake! Just tell them to charge it, please!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--EiZV61JTLI/VoMt-r1diyI/AAAAAAAAAIg/WhN8eQ58xCo/s640/blogger-image--608996465.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--EiZV61JTLI/VoMt-r1diyI/AAAAAAAAAIg/WhN8eQ58xCo/s640/blogger-image--608996465.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyone who's ever seen Jeff Koons' work in person knows he does things in a big, big way. Like the time he wrapped the H & M flagship store in pictures of his balloon dog sculpture. Not only did the image make it on to a handbag, but on the store's shopping bag as well, making it an amazing piece of portable art work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On a totally different note, if you ever need someone to make balloon animals for a party, <a href="http://www.viralnova.com/masayoshi-matsumoto-balloon/" target="_blank">this guy</a> is amazing. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Talk about the end of an era. This spring, Emmy award-winning costume designer <a href="http://patriciafield.com/pages/bio" target="_blank">Patricia Field</a> will close the doors of her iconic east side store, leaving holes in the hearts of the New Yorkers who've shopped there for the last 50 years. Everyone from Bergdorf Blondes to drag queens to safety-pinned punks came here for one-of-a-kind items like halter tops made of Beanie Babies or metal bunny ears. See it now, because once this store goes dark, so, too, does the existence of a certain time. Here's to you, Patricia!</div>

We here at the Bagatelle Museum love the city of London more than be expressed and the first place we hit every time is the <a href="http://www.vam.ac.uk/" target="_blank">Victoria and Albert Museum</a>. Dedicated to design, this museum is a must for anyone obsessed with textiles, graphic arts, fashion and the like. Not only do we love the museum but we get a kick out of the name--can you imagine a "Bill and Hilary Museum" or, heaven forbid, a "George and Laura Museum"?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
By the way, the "V&A" as it's more commonly known has a really cool interactive feature on its website right now that lets you design your own <a href="http://www.vam.ac.uk/designawig" target="_blank">18th-century wig</a>. Here's the one we designed! </div>

We can't look at this bag and not think of the "There's so much beauty in the world" <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB0th8vNLxo" target="_blank">scene</a> from "American Beauty." Creator of some of the most beautiful wallpapers in the world, <a href="http://www.degournay.com/index.php" target="_blank">de Gournay</a> is experiencing a resurgence of sorts and we couldn't be happier about it. We here at the museum don't even want to think about what we would do for just a little sliver of one of their breathtaking hand-painted murals. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fKzaFjOqLM0/UHpQFsLFL_I/AAAAAAAACRU/B2P71PyGJ50/s1600/Neiman+Marcus+British+Fortnight.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fKzaFjOqLM0/UHpQFsLFL_I/AAAAAAAACRU/B2P71PyGJ50/s320/Neiman+Marcus+British+Fortnight.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In 1957 Neiman Marcus started a tradition called "<a href="http://www.neimanmarcus.com/index.jsp?itemId=cat14560751" target="_blank">Fortnight</a>" in which they celebrated the wares, traditions, and people of other countries, even flying in luminaries like Princess Grace from those countries to glam up the event. Lasting two weeks, the event was meant to get a little shopping excitement going between the delivery of fall merchandise and the Christmas rush. It must have worked because it ran until 1986 (the very last fortnight was for Australia). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Starting in about 1963 a theatrical costume designer named Alvin Colt designed the graphics and would continue to do so until the final fortnight. Since we spent New Years weekend binging on Downton Abbey and we're in an English kind of mood, we thought we'd pay tribute to Alvin and his work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<span style="text-align: center;">On a side, note, <a href="http://support.thirteen.org/site/Ecard?ecard_id=2041" target="_blank">this</a> is one of the funniest "fortnight" themed cartoons we've ever seen. </span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7827271183902471255.post-9458792380240887842014-10-08T20:46:00.000-07:002016-01-08T11:52:36.654-08:00Christian Louboutin - 20th Anniversary - London, 2012<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XkWsNWAMq6Y/VDX8U0FrhGI/AAAAAAAAAos/dT9FRmVXJSg/s1600/CLouboutin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XkWsNWAMq6Y/VDX8U0FrhGI/AAAAAAAAAos/dT9FRmVXJSg/s1600/CLouboutin.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Now we know how the curators at the Louvre felt when they heard they would be the custodians of the Mona Lisa. Developed to commemorate the 20th anniversary of M. Louboutin's foray into shoe design, this assemblage-themed bag is about as extraordinary as it gets and easily makes our list of the Top 10 Shopping Bags of All Time (a list we haven't actually made yet, but when we do, this will be on it).<br />
<br />
If you're a fan of the man who brought us the red sole, you probably know that this bag was inspired by Louboutin's workspace, beautifully re-created in the extraordinary exhibition, "Christian Louboutin: 20 Years" which premiered at the Design Museum in London a few years ago. What its title lacked in imagination, the show more than made up for in content, and we HIGHLY recommend you catch it if and when it comes to your part of the world (it was touring the globe for a while there). Like the bag, the show captured all the messy, explosive, cheeky brilliance of its subject and is one we wish were on permanent display.<br />
<br />
Incidentally, although Louboutin has been quoted as saying that the red sole came to be after he was so dissatisfied with a pair of shoes he'd designed that he grabbed a red nail polish and painted the soles, the exhibition attributed the signature look to a sign Louboutin saw as a child in his native Paris warning women wearing heels not to try to navigate a certain street. Should you choose to believe the latter version and feel you need to own the sign yourself, you can pick one up <a href="http://www.bhv.fr/">here</a> on your next trip to Paris.<br />
<br />
Oh, and...you're welcome. ;)<br />

Hugely popular, the Katsuya restaurant in L.A. was designed by Philippe Starck, designer of everything from lamps for Target to high-speed trains (Interestingly, he started his career designing inflatable furniture.) We absolutely love this simple but elegant design. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Looking at this destroyed <a href="http://www.valentino.com/en/home/maison/10000-maison" target="_blank">Valentino</a> bag we know how the museum staff at Louvre must have felt upon first seeing the broken arms of the Venus de Milo. Bereft, disillusioned, and utterly directionless. So sad to see a thing of such beauty in ruins like this. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All we can say about this once purposeful, glorious bag is: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We will grieve not, but find strength in what remains behind. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Um, actually, we have one more thing to say. If you haven't seen <a href="http://www.valentinomovie.com/#dvd" target="_blank">this</a> rent it from iTunes immediately. Actually, we recommend buying it--there's an extra DVD that comes with it of a film called "The Perfect Life" that's actually even better than the movie. </div>

There's so much to love about this bag it's hard to start. The bold graphics, the wheat, the grapes, and the dramatic face. Kind of reminds us of <a href="http://www.fashionwiredaily.com/first_word/media/preview.weml?photo_id=113791" target="_blank">this</a> dramatic face. </div>

She's essentially the Tabitha of stores instead of hair salons and she's a terrific character. This year she opened a boutique in the <a href="http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Mary+Portas/BRAND_MARY%20PORTAS,default,sc.html" target="_blank">House of Fraser</a> department store chain and it really is how amazingly wearable all her choices were. Great, great place to go if you're looking for really, really practical but stylish clothing. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the women we most admire here at Bagatelle is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/World-Gloria-Vanderbilt-Wendy-Goodman/dp/0810995921/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350793989&sr=8-1&keywords=gloria+vanderbilt" target="_blank">Gloria Vanderbilt</a>. In spite of her wealth, she never, ever stops creating. From <a href="http://www.gloriavanderbiltfineart.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=collage" target="_blank">collages</a> to fashion to linens, she's done it all. Life magazine once called her <span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;">“a feminine version of the Renaissance Man.” (We think maybe what they actually meant was a <i>female</i> version of a Renaissance Man. A <i>feminine</i> version would just be an effete man, which is totally fine, we just don't think that's what they meant.)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These bags are from Chase Manhattan Bank if you can believe that (what we want to know is why a bank would even need shopping bags, let alone ones these big--does anyone take that much money out of the bank?), and they really reflect Gloria's aesthetic. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
By the way, if you're up for a really interesting read, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/TRIO-Intimate-Friendship-Vanderbilt-ebook/dp/B005FQ1FDK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1350794079&sr=8-2&keywords=trio+saroyan" target="_blank">this</a> is fascinating. </div>

What a shame Lady Gaga was born too late to see the legendary Fiorucci's--it would have been the perfect place for her to hang out in the window and get tattooed. If you weren't there to see it either, it was to the late 70s and early 80s what...well, what...well, just <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQW9Ufb0VuA" target="_blank">watch this</a> and you'll get the idea. Of course, now that the age of disco, punk, new wave, and even grunge are well behind us, the shenanigans at Fiorucci's seem charmingly tame, but it certainly makes us nostalgic for the time and place. </div>

<br />
The oldest piece in my collection, this was actually what they used to wrap gloves in at <a href="http://www.shopstyle.com/action/loadRetailerProductPage?id=261314484&pid=uid4809-22372053-36" target="_blank">Macy's</a>. This was a gift from my parents that they gave me the year I worked there. I love the message above the logo: "Customers will please report at once any incivility or Inattention on the part of any employee of the house." All I can say is that if the bags had said this when I worked there, the store would have had to shut down as our uncivil days far outnumbered our civil ones. Bloodshed would not have surprised me. (Note that the glove maker notes that the gloves will not "catch on lace". Thank goodness--I so hate it when my gloves catch on my lace. Sort of like when my bitters spill on my petticoat.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Judging by the address of the store, I'm guessing this would have been used sometime in the mid- to late-1800s. </div>

Since it's closed and there's nothing we can really say about it, let's focus on this great <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVrC6o9sEcU" target="_blank">Georgette</a>! I got this during what I call my Acquisition Summer when I made it my business to scour the stores of Paris with the idea of amassing the world's best collection of shopping bags and business cards. This was a bag that I had seen all the chic young women of Paris carrying and the one I knew I couldn't leave town without. When I walked into the <a href="http://www.shopstyle.com/action/loadRetailerProductPage?id=307165804&pid=uid4809-22372053-36" target="_blank">Jean-Paul Gaultier </a>boutique to ask for it, I felt as nervous as I would have if I'd gone in there to steal something. Luckily, the teenager behind the counter sensed my desperation and gave me one in spite of the fact that I hadn't bought anything.<br />
<br />
As you can see, it's a replica of a Parisian advertising kiosk and looks more like a piece of art than a shopping bag. I'm about 5'3" ish and it comes up to my hips. I've given up hope of ever finding a better one.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7827271183902471255.post-17527687933990078672012-10-19T14:35:00.000-07:002014-09-20T16:52:01.464-07:00Fendi - New York City, New York, 1990s<div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times;"><a href="http://www.shopstyle.com/action/loadRetailerProductPage?id=455146329&pid=uid4809-22372053-36" target="_blank">Fendi</a> always makes Mlle Bagatelle think of PETA protesters which makes her think of fur which makes her nostalgic for <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcW5vcpfROw">this commercial</a> for the <a href="http://ritzfurs.com/articles.html">Ritz Thrift Shop;</a> a commerical that played virtually non-stop during her childhood and which she absolutely loved. A sort of upscale Salvation Army for fur, this store must have supplied half the women in 1970s New York with fur coats (before they had to worry about being ambushed by animal rights activists hurling fake blood). Like lots of girls growing up then and there, Mlle Bagatelle could recite the copy by heart and knew just when to pause, caress the collar, and charmingly say, "Oh, thank you," to the imagined narrator. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times;">And speaking of the Ritz Thrift Shop, looks like there's <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO6XZQsFPoQ&feature=related">another commercial</a> from 1969 with which Mlle Bagatelle was unfamiliar. Airing a few years before the iconic "Oh, thank you," spot, this one doesn't have quite the refinement of the subsequent ad. The voiceovers in this are hilarious, especially "Mr. K" saying "...and for some glamour in your life..." You'll see. (Love the way his New York accent turns "Somali leopard" into "Somali lepud." Ah...my people.)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times;">Also, don't miss the change in wallpaper. They clearly shot both commercials in the exact same part of the store using the exact same mirrors but changed the wallpaper at some point in the years between shoots. While the first one seems to be a mylar tree theme and the second seems to be more of a camouflage pattern, they're so similar it makes you wonder why they even bothered. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times;">You have to love that the "Oh, thank you" woman walks in on what looks to be a warm, sunny day wearing only a light jacket and comes out wearing a fur coat.</span></div>

As someone who grew up in the 70s MB is extremely excited to see this house get back in the fashion game (now if only they would bring the original New York Fiorucci store back). It's a looong story but in a nutshell, the <a href="http://www.shopstyle.com/action/loadRetailerProductPage?id=458438019&pid=uid4809-22372053-36" target="_blank">Biba</a> name was essentially purchased by <a href="http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/">House of Fraser</a>, a British-owned department store and as far as we can see, every effort is being made to keep the integrity of the brand in tact. Having recently visited the Biba department at H of F, we here at the museum are happy to report that stylistically things look very much the same. Black walls, gold accents, and of course, all with a strong nod to the art deco/art nouveau styles. While we've heard and are sorry that the brand's original creator, Barbara Hulanicki, is extremely unhappy about this new iteration of her company, we have to admit that we're thrilled to see the Biba name alive and thriving.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7827271183902471255.post-82855845934317208392012-10-16T13:24:00.000-07:002014-09-20T17:55:18.797-07:00Tory Burch - Los Angeles, 2010<div style="text-align: center;">

Glam, maybe (geometric wallpaper, lacquer and lucite as far as the eye can see, gold accents and one giant white statement piece which was usually the couch), but timeless nonetheless. In fact, she is so on the money with her interpretation of understated 70s glam, that one almost can't help but be reminded of <a href="http://www.ashleyhicks.com/david-hicks/" target="_blank">this designer's</a> iconic designs.<br />

Speaking of that designer, did you know he designed his own coffin? And I thought <span style="font-style: italic;">I </span>was a planner!
